Slave State

It has been asked whether one is a slave if he is unaware that he is enslaved. The word slave has many definitions, but none that I have found specify any distinction as to awareness of circumstance. An interesting quote floating around in the Internet, which may have given rise to this question in recent years, is;

“A free man chooses. A slave obeys.”

Oddly enough, the author of this quote turns out to be a video game character by the fictitious name Andrew Ryan. I think it is a good quote nonetheless, but it also does not delineate a state of awareness. My personal conclusion is that a man can still be a slave, though he is unaware of it. He may have freedoms in some regards, but in some way that he is blind to, he may yet be obeying a directive he feels is necessary or natural.

Slave State does refer to a specific enslavement which most people are unaware of.

And all you get are the lies

The news is a mess
‘Cause they own all the press
But you think it’s just the other team

These things are not always what they seem

That’s how they say to you
Slave
Stay
Asleep

And that’s how they make it a
Slave
State
For keeps

They keep you blind to the

We fight each other
Our sisters and brothers
But don’t look behind the curtain

When you look deeper
It gets even creepier
But one thing that does remain certain

Is that they’re saying to you
Slave
Stay
Asleep

And that’s how they make it a
Slave
State
For keeps

And they control every side
But all you get are the lies

That’s how they say to you
Slave
Stay
Asleep

And that’s how they make it a
Slave
State
For keeps

Keep your eyes off of the
